Virtual Memory??

How can I Increase virtual memory on my computer when it is low?

Answers:
You may have your Virtual Memory set wrong.

Check your virtual memory's paging file. Keep in mind when re-setting this, is that your Virtual Memory-Paging file should be NO larger then 1.5 times the amount of Memory you have installed.

<example> You have 512mb of memory, so your Virtual Memory should be 768mb

<example> You have 1gig of memory, so your virtual memory should be about 1500 (mine is 1535 exact).

To check your virtual memory paging file size. Go to My Computer , right click on it with your mouse,
chose Properties. Go to the Advanced (tab). On the Advanced (tab) click the Performance Settings button.

Under the Performance / Settings Button, Chose the Advanced (tab) . On this Advanced (tab) you should see your
Virtual Memory Paging file size.

If it is not set at 1.5 times the amount of your Memory. Then I suggest you change it. So click the Change
Button. And put the dot on "System Managed Size" . Click the SET button, then click the OK button, then the
APPLY button if you can , then the OK button. Restart your computer. Go back there to see if the size was
reset. Make sure it reset to an amount no larger then 1.5 x (times) the amount of Memory you have installed.

Good Luck
if your running vista a memory stick will do the job
The other answer is correct but you might benefit from a little more info about VM. The size of the pagefile, when being managed by Windows, begins at the minimum size, 64Mb. When more space is needed, the memory manager, which has absolute priority within the operating system, interrupts whatever is running and allocates another chuck of VM. To eliminate these interruptions and notices, set the minimum and maximum to the same amount, 1.5 times RAM.
It's also a good idea to occasionally reset the VM to zero to clear any fragments or corrupted segments. Reboot and then reset it back to the original settings.
You can change your virtual memory by altering amount of resources for your computer to use for it. Virtual memory uses free space as a resource. So you can change the the amount free space reserved for the Virtual memory. When you get to the Virtual Memory menu select the Custom Size check box. Then choose the initial size and the max size. Depending on how much free space you have you can choose what an amount that is at least 1.5 times greater than your physical RAM. Keep the initial and max size the same to cut down on your CPU constantly changing the paging file. If you are still confused the link below has a visual step by step instructions.

1.Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
2.Click Performance and Maintenance, and then click System.
3.On the Advanced tab, under Performance, click Settings.
4.Under Virtual memory, click Change.
5.Under Drive [Volume Label], click the drive that contains the paging file that you want to change. In most computers its C:
6.Under Paging file size for selected drive, click to Custom size check box. You can enter the amount of memory you would like to reserve for Virtual memory by entering the initial and maximum size.
7.Click Set
Hope this helps!
