I'm first tempted to ask about your hardware specifications, but odds are it's just because your computer's file system is very defragmented.
Here's the quickest way to take care of that:

Download 'Quickstartup'. it allows you to select what you want to start when you turn your machine on. Its a freebie if you can find it! but try 'CNET'.

Coudl be something to do with not enough RAM or simply that you have too many programs running at start up. Have you run disk clean and defrag lately?
have you thought of doing a complete recoverery back to factort settings? this generally helps, if not then ask for advice from a computer expert.
run msconfig: here's how:
~ click start, run and then type msconfig
you can select the startup programs there click ok and then reboot
do u run anti virus + firewall? if not thats the probable cause..
u need both..
have you installed anything new recently?
install these
http://www.filehippo.com/download_spybot...
http://www.filehippo.com/download_ad-awa...
http://www.filehippo.com/download_avg_an...
update/scan with avg.. if theres something that won't go.. tap f8 on boot, safe mode.. and scan...
http://www.filehippo.com/download_zoneal...
install that.. if you haven't got a firewall.
http://www.filehippo.com/download_cclean...
run that
issues tab + cleaner
should speed up things..
after that mycomputer > right click on a drive "tools" defrag..
failing that if your running xp with less than 256 mb of memory get 1gb
if its vista.. 2gb would be good.
If you have macaffee or norton installed switch off all the startup checks
Remove all un-neccessary programs
From the run menu type msconfig and untick un-necessary startup programs
From all programs > startup remove any un-necessary programs
Finally If your harddrive is making a repetetive clicking noise replace it !
try spyware / antivirus scans
disk cleanup and defrag
uninstall anything old
look for a registry fixing program, reg dr or registry mechanic are good but i don't know if they cost
if your computer is so slow than you can make it batter from this idea.. there are some procedure like change in your computer setting and what is it you just visit her http://speed-up-your-pc.blogspot.com/...

It may be because of the amount of memory you have on your computer... try defragmenting your hard-drive... put your self on a schedule so that you are less likely to have loose ends in your CPU... another idea would be to simply add more memory to your computer... Both of these worked for me, I am pretty sure they will work for you.
