What can I do to fix the problem?

People always want to kick me in the butt when I ask them this... I'm not being a smart *** or anything, but is it plugged in?
Let's see, if mine wasn't working first (after checking that it was plugged into the computer, then the power bar) I'd hit the mute button on my keyboard to make sure I didn't accidentally push it. Then I'd go to Star > Programs > Accessories > Entertainment > Volume Control to see if it's turned down. Sometimes I turn down the media player and it turns all the sound. Then I'd check the device manager to see if there was anything wrong with the drivers. If not, I'd reboot and see if it works after that. If it doesn't. I'd take out the drivers and reboot and let it reinstall... after that, I'd go and find some other speakers to see if it's my speakers that went on the fritz. If it still wasn't working. I'd pull out some old sound card from an old computer and see if that works. Then if that didn't work I'd unplug everything from my computer and chuck it out the window because by that time I'm out of patience.
Then I'd go outside and start getting mad at myself for breaking my window... I'd go and find something to cover the window and pick up by PC from the. well, you get the idea.
Reboot th PC, if that doesn't work you need to download nd install replacement drivers from the PC / sound card maker's web site.
