Are PC's Designed to run constantly?

Are home PC's designed to run 24/7?My Son shuts his down every night.Seems like I heard that it's not good for your computer to do that.Does it really matter?

Answers:
PCs can run forever, in theory. There are moving parts that will wear out with time, including system fans that keep your PC cool and the moving parts in the hard drive, where your data is stored. The biggest reason to reboot your computer every once in a while is Windows. The longer it runs, the more unstable it gets until it'll eventually error and you'll have to reboot anyway. There's also the obvious power savings in shutting your computer down at night.
They are designed to be able to run constantly, but I would shut it off when you are not using it to save power.
yes they are designed to run 24/7
but shutting down decreases chances of malware
Your hard drive is the heart of the idea that turning off the computer is bad. Ultimately, turning it off is the best solution because heat is the hard drive's worst enemy. So just turn it off so the hard drive will still turn strong the next time you use it.

Good Luck and Happy Computing!
The computer itself can run constantly. It may use up a lot of power though if you are running CPU intensive tasks (things like audio/video transcoding).

Many people use similar hardware to that of home PC's to run 24/7 servers. They often have more memory but that's for load handling not stability. Some have RAID for disk protection but again not a problem except in mission critical applications.

Your PC's physical hardware can survive a long time without needing to reboot the system.

The software you run probably can't. If you (like many people) run Windows you will find that it will most likely crash and force a reboot. If you run a Linux based computer it can survive much longer.

It shouldn't shut down every night though. Stay up and watch if it displays any messages before rebooting.
