Hardware problem or what????

well my problem is i bought a new dvd writer for my uncles computer and installed it. he asked me to format it and reinstall windows. but after formating the drive there are two problems :
1. the installation completes and the installation become corrupt.
2. the installation does not complete at all.
i have tried both xp and 2000. i scanned the drive for errors and it has failed saying that there are many unrecoverable errors.
i dunno if it is a problem with the hard drive or mobo.
should replacing the hard drive solve the problem? is there a problem with the mobo connector?

Hello,

Why did you reload the OS when you just INstalled a DVD writer?

It should have found the dvd writer and installed the drivers for it (XP).

Are you talking about when you installed, that the dvd came with some sort of burning software and THAT is what is corrupt and does not complete?
We need to know what actual messages do you see to figure out whats wrong.

One possible problem can be MBR. You may have to overwrite the Master Boot Record (MBR) on your hard drive as that may have been messed up. Try googling it and read about it.
going by your feedback

"i scanned the drive for errors and it has failed saying that there are many unrecoverable errors"

>> your hard drive has errors
if you have a spare hard drive, it's worth trying a dummy install > simply to isolate problem

sure lots of tools to maybe markout the bad sectors & use it
but that's only a short term solution
this hard drive is going to give you troubles & will fail sooner than later

that you have another working computer, suggest you try some free tools as below,

check the most appropriate version & you can make a boot disk, with lots of tooling

find out which r what hard drive is in it.look in the device manager,it should tell yea which drive and kind is in it,then go to manufactures site, and download the software to recertafie the drive,if it has no internal problems,,,which u can test the drive with it too.anyway,if u run it,it will recertafie the drive to the way it was when it was new,it will fix all the bad sectors.and also will check integity of the drive, but u have to no which drive is in it,as all have a difent peace of software,,,like western digital,,,maxtor ,if u cant get into,,r start windows,u may have to open it up,,to see what u have.but recertafieing the disk will fix it,,,(bad sectors)u will have to put the program on a floppy,,r burn to a cd...and set bois to boot from cd,,if it has no floppy.give it a try,,as it soulds as tho u have no things else to lose at this point.if that fails,,then u will have to replace the drive,,anyways the drive software will let u no one way r another.as iv done the same,,it works
