AIW9800 Pro Graphics card v weak PSU??

AIW9800 Pro Graphics Card Question.

Last week all was working fine, running the above graphics card with an Antec 300w Smart Power PSU. Then the power supply popped and it was time for a new PSU.

As this was just a back up computer I (foolishly) went cheap, and boutht a 350W Colour IT PSU.

Ever since I have had no end of problems. I keep getting the red text appear on screen asking me to attach power to the card, along with a series of beeps! This does not happen all the time, occasionally the machine powers up and all is fine for the day.

My initial thoughts are that the PSU is not providing enough power to the card. Does this seem about right? Would I be far better biting the bullet and ordering in a named brand?

I will be testing this theory out later when I take the machine home and attach it to my neo power supply, if it works then then I have pretty much answered my own question, but would appreciate any thoughts in the mean time.

Regards
Tony

Answers:
ATI 9800 Pro draws 47 watts or about 4 amps on the +12V rail. The 350W power supply you bought may have been strong on the +3.3V and +5V rails but weak on the +12V rail. Newer power supplies complying with ATX V2.01 or V2.2 have strong +12V rail (actually dual rails). Take note that a higher rated power supply runs cooler, lasts longer and gives you plenty of elbow room for upgrades.
