If you are running 32-bit Operating Software with at least 32-bit processor, then your system will only recognize maximum of 3GB RAM. Unless you are buying more than 3GB RAM, your computer is probably smart enough to detect any new hardwares you have put and automatically recognize any new RAMs. To get beyond 3GB RAM (say, 2x2GB RAM for 4GB) you need 64-bit Operating Software like Windows XP Professional 64-bit version or Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit version.
