"Good old days" of computers?
64-bit DOS OS? yea that would be nice.
Answers:
Your selections aren't old enough to be "old"!!
I remember when computers took the whole room, had vacumn tubes and needed a 10Ton air conditioner; BUT, I STILL use MS-DOS 5.0 and windows 3.1 for some things, on a 286 at 33Mhz.
If it was re-released with your changes, it would be XPSP2!! (Vista is their first NEW OS, from the ground up, and look at the mess.)
DOS for 64bit and 128bit HAS BEEN AVAILABLE for over 30 years, along with multiple processor support!! It was, and still is, used on large mainframes, (underlying UNIX for one!)
NOTE: the 'boot' system for ALL computers STILL uses a form of DOS in one fashion or another.
you can 3.1 and floppy disks. I'd like some aps and drivers to go with 64-bit win os. think that'll happen anytime soon?
How about a new law that if a company is going out of business that part of the bankruptcy requirements is to place the source code of any programs it developed go into the public domain.
You could even extend that to any program not destined for further deployment or development.
Think of all the programs that have been written by defunct company's that are no longer in existence but had written decent programs, but maybe just bad marketing or management are now gone.
Why hasn't MS released the final DOS version source into public domain. Is there any chance that it would consider doing something with DOS now or in the future. I hardly think so.
There are countless examples of decent software that can not be used because there is no one that can port the source code to the new OS's.
hmm lets see NO, i hated those days. i hated my old computer that was from like 2001. its all about the fast and new, and if you know what your doing on a computer and have one virus, spyware, adware program, your gona be fine. i just cant handle waiting for a youtube video, to load to 2 hours.
WindowsXP , Vista , Linux all have 64bit ,ntfs, in Dos( digital operating systems) How about an apple 4k, I worked with that, reel to reel, punch cards. and then 51/4 floppies and then 31/2 floppies and then meg hard drives and then Big Foot hard drives and now 750gigs and terra bytes ! Through all that nothing ran perfect , just less disastrous if it didnt. Would you rather fix a flat or shoot your horse?
there is. but it's not made by microsoft. it's called linux. it's based on a solid and proven os. it has as many feature as windows, but without all the spyware and viruses. check it out, the most popular distribution currently is ubuntu.
it's also free by the way.
Nope! Not at all. There was a very limited selection in software. For the most part you had to know how to write code to really get anything complex done and then you had to compile it. It seemed like it took forever to process some programs because processors were so slow. When working with spreadsheets you had to recalculate everything whenever you made a simple change. Computers still crashed whether they were desktop, mini- or mainframe. Storage capacities were very limited, often unreliable and you had to back up daily (or more) to keep from losing data, usually to analog magnetic tape. Most printers were slow and noisy and tended to jam a lot. Modems were extremely slow. Access to the internet was very expensive and had limited resources. Displays were most often text only in either green and black or amber and black with low refresh rates and I often had a severe headache after working with them all day.
No, I don't miss those days at all.
