What is the average lifespan of a computer hard drive (amount of re-writes etc)?

Answers:
Hard drives are affected by the following:

Mechanical wear - servo arm bearing, motor bearing
Shock damage - heads hitting the platter
Thermal stresses

Manufacturers of hard drives publish mtbf (mean time before failure) data for their drives, the greater the number, the longer you can expect the drive to last. Please remember that in a normal distribution, half of the items will fail before the mean.

These days, you can expect the hard drive to last around 2-3 years of normal use, but they can fail early with no warning.

Most PCs are only designed to last 2-3 years in total. I remember the days of rechargeable cmos batteries that wound last 5 years or more.

Anyone remember when we stopped calling the hard drives winchester drives?

BTW, flash drives, as used in USB memory sticks can have as few as 500 r/w cycles before they fail. Don't rely on these as your only backup.
you cant really predict...
7-12 years
depend how the user use it..
The amount of writes and re-writes has no effect on the lifespan of a hard drive.

Only environment and operating time have an effect on the drive.

If the drive is in a hot, moist environment, it will burn out faster.

You can expect the average hard drive to last 5+ years in a good environment barring some mechanical malfunction.
It is the number of re-writes. Amount is like, er- amount of fox s hit in a lair.
yeah thats a hard call because it really depends on the user. i once a year wipe my drive clean and reinstall windows and whateva else i needed. it helps to keep you running for years down the road
i think it depends on the brand. and also how new it is. i think the newer ones last longer. if its dell or a mac it will probably last pretty long. those are good brands for computers. :)
It can be anywhere from a few hours to a few years...it's really hard to say.

Just keep backups of everything... When you are dealing w/ hard drives, it's not "if" but "when" they fail.
Well I've been around since 2001 even Dave trying to pop my clogs didn't work.....up yours Dave.
I come across some strange items when I do what I do.
I saw a 27 year old Western Digital 10MB hard disk still working a few months ago and still in service!.
Who knows.
