You'll know how to get a full lot more computer for $2000 if it's a desktop. But, if mobility is important, afterwards you need a laptop. Decide that first.

Ok if you want a computer that can edit videaos lacking buying new video hardware by a .mac notebook they come next to alot of stuff. Get a PC if you have a polite prgram to edit movies.GET A NEW CAMCORDEr they are alot better immediately than 5 years ago. I hope you have a great time ediing video

if you dont mind going for a time over budget... it worth it.
If you have $2,000 budge with a Mac running Final Cut Pro as your editor. If you're tendency towards PC then see if you draw from an XP box with at lowest 2gb of RAM with a worthy processor, I would use Adobe Premier as your editor. As for your video camera, definitely upgrade it. If you are going to be getting into video editing your best bet would be of the Mini DV range, there are hundreds to choose from pick which one fits your budget.
Get a Mac they are so much better than window when it comes to video editing, look at the G5 series they are expencive but good
