My computer won't recognize a plug + play usb device!?

i have windows xp and it is supposed to be plug and play. but it isn't. even worst, none of the drivers on the cd support windows xp, BECAUSE it's plug and play. how do i make the computer recognize it?

ps. it's an external hard drive.

I faced similar problem before. Plug the USB to the port. Try another port now. Still not detected? U will see an error message. Right click on My computer, click on Properties. Click on Hardware=>Device Manager. Can you see ur USB in Universal Serial Bus Controllers??
If yes, then right click on it and select "Uninstall". Now click on "Action" (besides File menu) and select "Scan for hardware changes".
If no, then there's a problem with the USB. Most probably, it is related to the casing (cover) of the USB. Try to change it and then plug back the USB. I suppose ur USB is 2.0. Try to plug a flash drive in both the ports and see if its detected or not. Just to test the ports.

Gud Luck!!
try a different USB port or if you know how to change what each USB port does get into that area.

some USB's are pre-destined as items. my digital camera will work on one front USB but not the other on my tower and on all in the back. The one front one is destined as a hard drive unit. My steering wheel has to plug into the same as the camera. Plus some USB's are different, some are high speed and some are not.
Something sounds faulty. Are you getting any indication that your computer is recognizing some kind of USB connection when you plug it in?

First, try connecting to a different USB port. Second, try a different USB cable if you have one. Thirdly, return the drive for another.
go to www.download.com and search for the driver. OR you can go to control panel and click "add new hardware". It will help you detect and try to install it for you.
there is some settings in BIOS about USB /plug n play.
try to reset that. or u should update ur windows.
