Answers:
first off, what type of memory are you talking about? Is it the very old 72 pin sims? SD-Ram, or the newer DDR-Ram?(what is the CPU you are using, knowing this may help to determine the memory type if you don't know it). also how many memory slots do you have and what order do you have this memory in? Sometimes it may help by putting the memory in highest to lowest.
A final suggestion is to take out your old memory and just instert the new memory you got from your friend, if the computer boots up either this new memory is not compatible with the one of the older ones or it is simply a matter of the order you are putting it in.
Hope this helps
Could be incompatible there are different types of RAM.
Most likely, its an unsupported type of RAM. Motherboards will lock and not allow startup to avoid damage if unsupported devices are attached.
