Anybody know what "gbUpdate.exe" is? every now and then this takes over 99% of my cpu capacity and runs & runs

Answers:
That's the QuickBooks updater. The fact that it takes so much processor simply means it wasn't coded all that well.
qbupdate.exe is a process by Intuit which checks for software updates relating to Quickbooks. This program is a non-essential process, but should not be terminated unless suspected to be causing problems.
It is obviously an "executable" (.exe) file. When it runs and shows you nothing positive it is safe to play with it before you delete it, here's how:

Find out where it is located, right-click on it, rename it to "gbUpdate.xxx" (no quotes) and save it.

Reboot, if you have trouble, reboot into "safe mode" then rename it back to "gbUpdate.exe" (no quotes), save and reboot.

I don't think you'll have a problem. It sounds to me like an executable from an applicaton that needs the complete program to run properly, it doesn't have it, so it really is lost in computer land.
