What is difference between North bridge &south bridge surrounded by system mother board ?

Hi system techies,
In a interview i face this question, but i wont know the answer & concept on this devices, but i hold faced the south bridge driver installation contained by Win98 systems while changing Harddisk to another system. Any body could furnish me a proper answer to clear my doubt.

The NB chip i believe works mainly next to the controller for the memory, the graphics and cpu interfaces. while the SB is more like a divergent controller handlling Lan, PS2 mouse, Keyboard controller, USB and so on.
