Why doesn't Plug and Play doesn't work properly on my computer?

Hi, I have an interesting problem with my computer (to put it nicely).Whenever I try to install any new device (like usb) it detects the device, but asks for drivers. Since it's supposed to be plug and play technology it never finds any compatable, and gives me the message "unable to install device". Here's what I've done in regards to the problem so far.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1150 lap, with the most up to date version of windows XP, AND have updated all the available chipsets for my computer since this problem occured. I've also checked to make sure the plug and play option is enabled under services. I'm at a loss right now, and any suggestions anyones has would be greatly apprieciated.

It may also be that the uPnP (universal plug and play) framework service is not running on your PC any longer. You can check this by going to the control panel, then to administrative tools. From there select "services." It will load a list of all the services running, or not, on your PC.

My suggestion is, if you don't know what it does, leave it alone. Look for the one named "Universal Plug And Play Device Host" if it says automatic, leave it be. If it says "manual" or "disabled", double click it and from that menu set it to automatic, then select "start." It will start the process.

The only problem you might run into here is if it has any required dependencies (other services it needs to have running) that are stopped as well. You can find these in the tab labelled "Dependencies." Make sure each of those are running if you get an error about a dependant service not running. Hope this helps.
You should always update your system with Windows Update/Microsoft Update.
Plug and play means when you plug it in you don't have to set IRQ ports and interupts for it not that it will automaticly work. You need the driver for the device you are plugging in.

For example.

I have a Sony Ericsson w801i which has a usb cable that I can plug into a pc and upload music etc to my phone. If I plug that USB cable from my phone to the computer it will say 'Found new Hardware'. However, if I do not go to sony's site and download the software / drivers for the phone, windows will not be able to find the driver and say 'Unable to install device'. What are you trying to install?

You didn't eliminate anything, XP Pro has better built in driver support then XP home because XP Pro is obviously for business computers thus having more broad support. You need to load the drivers for in XP home for that device. I have already explained above how to accomplish this.
The drivers may be corrupted, that is why it wants them to be reinstalled
PlugNPlay has alot of meanings depending on who you talk to. The real meaning has already been answered in the string regarding the interrupts, etc.,.

Sometimes with USB, since the XP USB controllers really suck, you have to plug the device in and reboot the machine, even after installing drivers. <shrugs> Life is cruel and computers ruthless.
It's a Windows computer, the term is "Plug and Pray."
