I thought external hardrives could stop work getting lost if the computer crashes, is this true?
Answers:
you should back it up onto a hard drive, external, and also on to dvd, or cd , bye doing this you are, you are cutting your chances of loosing your data.
if by any chance your pc hardrive does pack up, and you install another one, it is good practice to have at least 2 part ions on your new hardrive,
the c drive for your operating system and programs, and the d drive for all your data, so if then you get any problems with your o/s system, you can reinstall it back on to the c drive, and not loose any data, that is on the d drive.
it is also a good thing to make an image of your c drive once you have all the programs that you want on your pc.
with this image , you can install this back on to your c drive, and you will have all the programs as well.
you can do this with norton ghost and a few other programs, the choice is yours.
the only thing that you will have to install then are the new windows up dates for the time you made the image cd. hope this is helpful to you

save your work often
if you are referring to, how to keep your files from being damaged when your harddrive dies on you, I suggest using a tape backup system or burning dvd's or using an external harddrive to back up your files. There is also online file storage services available
If you download your internal memory it saves it on the external hard drive...if your computer crashes you still have it saved
Yes, you can use an external hard drive so save your valuable files. You can also save them to a CD, or thumb drive. Depends on how many files you have to save and how much space they take up.
Yes if you have backed up or copied your work onto it first!
It doesn't matter if the drive is external or internal, so long as it is on a different drive than your OS, then whatever happens to your OS, it'll be OK.
In other words, use a slave drive and keep your files there. BTW I have had two Maxtor SATA drives fail, so I myself will only trust IDE drives and no Maxtor in my house ever again..
Music files never get lost it's just the windows files that usually get corrupted, if your computer keeps crashing then you need more memory in it to fix this.
