Is it worth buying a $500 laptop, then upgrading the processor and RAM?

I want a laptop to run Counter Strike Source, so i want decent power. (like 2 ghz processor and 1 gb of ram) Is it worth buying a horrible toshiba or acer, then buying a new processor and better RAM? is there any thing else i would need besides processor and RAM to run CSS? Graphics cards dont really matter do they?

Answers:
Take a close look at the REQUIREMENTS of the game that you want to play. Some are VERY FUSSY.

For Counter Strike Source, the box says:
Minimum: 1.2 GHz Processor, 256MB RAM, DirectX 7 level graphics card, Windows 2000/XP/ME/98, Mouse, Keyboard, Internet Connection

Recommended: 2.4 GHz Processor, 512MB RAM, DirectX 9 level graphics card, Windows 2000/XP, Mouse, Keyboard, Internet Connection

In this case, YES... the video card does not make much difference.

In general, you can't upgrade the processor in a laptop. In most cases, you can't upgrade the video card. You can add more RAM. Yes, Toshiba and Acer would be a good choice.

A really good gaming rig is a DESKTOP, because all sorts of upgrades are possible. Desktops are cheaper, last longer and cost less to upgrade. It is by far the best way to go for GAMING.

Good luck and Happy Computing!
Buy a good laptop ;)
no it is not because you cannot normally change processors on laptops. the ram you can sometimes change pretty easily. and graphics cards matter a lot. if you want to play games you will pretty much need a graphics card or you will have bad fps. and cheap laptops also are lacking other features that nicer ones will have.
you'd need to make sure you got a good graphics card and that all these upgrades are gonna be compatible...upon installation you may find otherwise...or not
The graphics card matters more than the ram and cpu when purchasing a new comptuer for gaming. This is true because you are purchasing a brand new computer. Any brand new computer will have a powerful enough cpu and memory to play games, but may not have a good enough graphics card for it.

Also, laptops are not designed for gaming. You will find that there isn't enough cooling and after about an hour, you'll fear your laptop is about to melt.

And when it comes to laptops, it's a lot of work to replace the CPU. I would recommend just getting what you want because the prices of laptop parts are terribly high anyway.
Unlike a desktop, it's hard to do upgrades on laptops, especially when it comes to the processor. So I would say just buy a good laptop.
Buying a cheap computer will only sell yourself short. Because if you want to do more with media and get cards and so on. You wont be compatable with other add ons.
