How many times can you do a system restore on windows xp?

We have owned the pc for a year and have had to use the system restore twice. How many times can we do this?. We had to use the system restore due to a virus both times. Isnt the virus still on the pc?.

Answers:
How many times you can use system restore depends upon how much hard drive space you have and how much you want to devote to system restore. It requires a pretty good amount of hard drive space.

The virus is no longer on your hard drive if you have used a good anti-virus program to remove it. If not, get one. AVG at http://free.grisoft.com/ is a good choice. There is a free version.

When your computer is free of the virus, set a restore point and delete all system restore points except your most recent.

To delete all restore points except the latest one, use the Disk Cleanup utility. Click Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and then Disk Cleanup. Click on the more options tab and then select Clean up in the System Restore dialog box.

That should get rid of anything remaining of the virus.
You can use restore so many times...
As your system restored your computer is safe from the virus which you installed last..
To avoid defects again and again try to recognize the virus software and don't use it.

if you didnt remove it or went back to where you got it. yes its still there.. why not run a virus protection that way you might not get any. and you can restore weekly if you til the computor dies ive done mind so many times i forget..
System Restore can be done as many times as you wish. Some virus tend to hide in the restore files. You Should Turn off System restore and Scan for viruses , because if they are in the restore files they cannot be deleted. So if you turn system restore off the points will be deleted so you can get the virus(if there is any). P.S After scanning make a restore point.
