What is CAS latency?

I be using CPU-Z to check the status of the RAM, and I saw the CAS latency is 4-4-4-12.

is 4-4-4-12 = speed?

another extra question,
if i want to affix more ram, do i own to buy new knock against that has a CAS latency of 4-4-4-12 too?
because i saw push with 5-5-5-12 is cheaper than 4-4-412

thx!!

Answer:
CAS Latency is one of masses measures of speed used to specify performance for S/DRAM. CAS Latency refers to how long it take for the physical memory module to respond to a read request. A lower CAS Latency rating means that the RAM is more responsive, which within theory should tender higher running.

In practice this number is more hype than anything else for the average computer user. CAS Latency is measured in memory bus clocks, which scheme a latency time of 4 is 4 bus clock ticks. A 667MHz bus for all intents and purposes ticks once every 0.0000000015 second. For the average computer user this means that the difference between CAS Latency 4 and 5 is nominal. As fast as computers run, a slightly longer memory access time will not effect recitation noticeably.

This number is provided for 2 possible reason. One is marketing, they can charge more for a "better" product, though it is better, the advantages may not be worth the premium. Another reason is some citizens choose to tweak the setting of their computers to gain small performance gain for the fun of it. People who participate within over clocking need the faster RAM speeds, not so much because their systems inevitability that 1-less cycle access time but rather because these parts are more experienced of handling the added stress of overclocking without failing.

So within the end, the choice is yours. If the premium is worth it for your requests, then by adjectives means wage it.

To answer your second question, contained by a modern system were timing wishes to be so exact, the faster RAM sticks will be slowed down to match the speed of the slowest RAM stick surrounded by the system. There is no absolute requirement to match the CAS Latency numbers when buying more sticks close to you do with the other specifications of RAM. You can other make a faster piece run slower, just don't try to build a slower part run faster!

Does this connote you need to bring more 4-4-4-12 RAM otherwise it will slow your system down? No, like I said up to that time, the impact is minimal unless you are trying to do very specific things near your system that would stress these aspects of the RAM.
This refers to the speed of transfer between the CPU and RAM. The 4-4-4-12 timings are not too impossible. 5-5-5-12 is slightly slower (but probably not noticeable). You'll be able to slow adjectives your RAM to 5-5-5-12 if you buy new RAM, but not vice-versa. If you cart 5-5-5-12 and try to set it to 4-4-4-12, you may run into instability.
