Would you choose a 1 core 3ghz or a dual core 1.6ghz processor?

Im looking to buy a new gaming desktop..and there are all these processors

Answers:
Dual Core of course. With the dual core, information is passed back and forth in two pipelines of sorts instead of just one and your applications will run faster. Dual Core is also beneficial with normal tasks like using photoshop, video editing, etc.
Dual Core. Keep up with technolgy so you can do upgrades later. 1 core : 1x3=3ghz 2x1.6ghz=3.2 plus better support coz of two cores.
Go with the Dual fore 1.6. Why? Because the CPU is often not the problem. The GPU (Graphics card) is the gaming bottle neck. A good CPU with a dual core allows modern games to work well and you, the gamer, to surf the net in another window while playing the game (with little screen change down time).

Single core systems are so... umm.. last year. :-)

Performance of games and multi-tasking is best done in multi core.

Hello; I'd have to agree with AlexAtlanta: the bottleneck (slowest part of your computer) will have to do with your video card, what type it is, how much ram it has... the next thing to worry about is sufficient or more than sufficient RAM... the third and least important of the three is splitting hairs about what CPU you're gonna have.

If you're gonna be a serious gamer, then you're talking about spending about $5k for a serious gaming PC! I thing dual core is the way of the future, (quad core too) as the software games will be written to specifically take advantage of them. As it is now, I don't see a lot of it out there now. Simply put, if the software doesn't know how to manage the hardware, it's not doing any good to have the hardware... That's why you never saw Intel dual CPU servers being used as gaming machines...

If I were into gaming, but not professional, i'd go with a single core processor, and focus my $$$ on the most RAM and baddest *** video card I could afford, I think that'd get you further than dishing out serious cash for the latest chips! But this'll only hold you over for a relatively short time, as serious gamers and software will be going dual and quad core, besides; in the PC world, six months is old technology! It gets expensive keeping up with this, so as I said; if you aren't a professional gamer, just get what you can reasonably afford!

I hope my humble opinions helps in your decision making process... also, checkout www.tomshardware.com and search around the forums for this very thing; you might find it enlightening!

Ciao!
Marcos
