Problem with cd drive..?
Is there something that i can download or install to fix this problem... or am i going to have to reformat the computer?

You have some problems on your HARDWARE.
Some solutions:
1-Push little bit IDE cable on motherboard and cd-rom itself.
2-Separate cd-rom cable from your hard disk by buying new IDE cable.
3-Remove temporarily your floppy drive cable & its power.
4-Remove temporarily your modem card.
5-Could it be the cd-rom itself, then check it to other computer if it still working.
These are my solutions when I encountered problem like yours.

try using a new cd.
Try shutting down the computer and restarting it. Always works for me. Otherwise, you may have to replace the drive. There are other options of course, but I don't know them.
How old is your CD Drive. Your CD laser head might be damaged. I think that might be your best option. Especially since CD roms are gone so cheap now. There might be some thing else causing this problem. But I think this is the best option for you.
Try this, go into Control Panel, then Performance and Maintenance, now click on System. Click on the Hardware tab at the top and click on teh Device Manager button. Now look for DVD/CD Rom Drives. Is there anything listed there at all? If so, does it have a yellow exclamation mark against it? Whether is does or not, try left click on it (if it is listed there) and then click the button at the top that looks like a monitor with a red X through it. Uninstall it, clocse all windows and restart the computer and let windows find it again.
This does not guarantee it will work again, it just might be a dead unit. DVD Writers are very cheap now, might be worth getting one.
