I have a Dell Inspiron 4300 and that connection has a drawing of a headphone. When I want to use my headphones I have to plug out the main speakers and plug the headphones into the red speaker connection.

Blue is microphone on my PC.
Maybe the headphone was damaged.
because its a dummy socket an also they change the sound socket from blue to green
