Answers:
Go and buy a new one - they don't last forever, and they're really cheap to buy these days.
you should check it out when you were buying it not now you bought it and brought it home...
ok anyway
im sure the power cable is plugged coz you said you opened it and put a cd into it. so the setting problem must be one of these :1.cable connections 2.slave/master/cable select mode 3.bios setup 4.software and operating systems problem
check the connection cables.i think the cable is IDE not SATA because its a second hand. for more information about how to plug IDE drivers into motherboard and how to slave or master them refer to manuals or search in www.wikipedia.org and google for IDE.
to reach bios setup page restart your pc and press "Del" button quickly and continusly search for something like this : first/second IDE master/slave... if it shows you your cd-drive name the problem is windows; but if it did not press auto detect button on that page ( or something like that ) to find it for you if it found it there is no problem but if it did not, the problem is connection or cd-drive.
at last throw your pc to seller`s head.
open yor pc..make sure your pc is dissconnected from wall socket.
now remove cd drive, its not hard four srews will be holding it in.
pull out ribbon cable from drive, then pull out power cable from drive.
when drive is out look at back of drive u will see jumpers, make sure the jumper connection is set to master or cable select(cs).
refitting is just the reverse..however make sure that the red line on the ribbon cable is closest to the cd power plug.
also follow the ribbon cable down to the motherboard and make sure its fully seated into socket on motherboard.
refit all covers and screws.
restart pc it should recognise cd.
if not you will have to go to control panel then system then hardware, then device manager then dvd/cd drive and then enable this device.
If after all that it doesn't work replace drive with new one...thats all I do if anything goes wrong with drives...it works for me.
just go and buy a DVD drive they are cheep now and its much better than having a CD drive
ok i think i can help you with this problem please do the following try installing Registry patch that is available for download from the following web link. http://www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts/xp_cd...
