1.7ghz dual core is it a 1.7 ghz that can perform 2 operations at once, or 1.7 ghz x 2 ( 3.4 )?

i know it is 2 cores on one dye, but does it class as a 1.7 ghz split (850 mhz x 2 ) or a 1.7 x 2 ( 3.4 )

Well the thing is that it really depends on what you are running software wise. A PC game or some other program that was designed for 1 CPU (called single-threaded) will run on a dual-core as it would on a single core. But programs that are multi CPU aware would run faster, maybe even twice as fast, but that is rare. So your answer would be: A 1.7GHz Dual-Core CPU would class between 1.7 and 3.4 depending on current program. closer to 1.7 to be sure. AMD or Intel would likely estimate an average and class it at say 2.2GHz. That is not to say the would ADVERTISE it as a 2.2GHz CPU mind you.

That's actually why CPU's are given model numbers now and you are not always told what the actual MHz is. It's not a very valuable measurement of performance nowadays anyway.

For example AMD had a 2.2GHz Single Core CPU they called an Athlon 64 3200+ refering to the fact that it could match the performance of a 3.2GHz Pentium 4.

The (basically) same CPU but a Dual Core Version was called an Athlon 64 X2 4200+ so they classed it 1000 higher.
I would presume the latter 1.7x2
No, It uses 1.7GHz per process. it is not divided or multiplied. They are separate cores used for different process.
1.7ghz processor, that can run 2 operations simultaneously
Only if the software supports dual core or multiple CPU. Then you can see a difference in performance.
The simple answer is 1.7 X2,
In reality it doesn't work like that but that is really all a simple user needs to know for an estimate,
Some older programs do not support dual core and so it will run at 1.7 Ghz,
Basically it is the same as two 1.7Ghz,
Around 75 % of 3.4.. but the dual core would take less power, run cooler and be quiter.. Multitasking is better than a 3.4 because most applications don't need a 3.4 to run.

example a virus scan and buring a dvd might be slower on 3.4 than on a 1.7 but just a virus scan or buring a dvd alone would be much faster on the 3.4.
