Which processor is better: AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 Dual-Core 4400+ or Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor E4400 (2MBL2, 2ghz

Answers:
The Core2 Duo processors are amazing. Go with that for now. AMD I'm sure will come up with a processor to beat the Core2 architecture eventually but that could be a couple years away. go with the current champ =)

The Core 2 Duo processors are much more efficient per MHZ. So seeing a .4GHZ difference still isn't enough to close the gap.
Go for Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor E4400 (2MBL2, 2ghz).
Core 2 duo is better than dual core.
Since you say you intend to use this machine for gaming besides surfing and maybe some other general use, I would recommend the 64 X2 4400+. AMD processors were designed for use with graphicly intensive programs such as todays games are becoming. the Athlon is rated at 2.4ghz, has a front side bus speed of 1600mhz, and will generally be less expensive on the pocket when compared to the E4400 Intel chip which is only rated at 2.0ghz processor speed, using an 800mhz front side bus.

Both processors are dual cores, which means that they are a single processor chipset with two separate cores that run at their total rated speed, which in this case is the 2.4ghz (AMD) and 2.0ghz (Intel) . For gaming I side with AMD processors, for some specific business applications like AutoCAD and a couple others, I would suggest the Intel.

The thing with processors today, if you filled a room with 50 computer knowledgable people and asked them to vote for their individual favorite processor manufacturer, I would bet the room would be about 50/50 between AMD and Intel. Each manufacturer designed their chipset for handling anything that can run in a windows environment, but they also geared them to operate better under specific conditions over their competitor.

Straight up comparison, Go with the AMD because:

1) 2.4ghz is faster than 2.0ghz
2) both processors are dual core, no clear victor there
3) 1600mhz FSB is faster than an 800mhz FSB
4) AMD 4400+ is generally less expensive than the E4400

So why not get the most bang for the buck.
Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor E4400 (2MBL2, 2ghz) Better, faster. Simple.
