What does the "Alt Gr" button on some keyboards do? and what does Gr stand for?

It is used on (non-US) keyboards to access symbols engraved on the lower left of the keytops.

For instance on a UK keyboard AltGr and the 4 key produce a euro symbol €.

Sometimes the symbols are not engraved... and I guess it depends on the OS how it interprets them, so win95 won't do a euro symbol but win2000 will even if the keyboard doesn't have the symbol engraved.

As examples... Alt-Gr and 1 on Ubuntu produces a superscript 1 - ¹
