P4 is old technology. Step up to the Pentium Dual Core Quad. or at a minimum the AMD 64x2 Athlon or FX series. Yes AMD is cheaper and benchmarks are almost equal. XP is better, more proven than vista. Vists is still having issues with compatibility. Go with a good name in boards. Asus is one of the better. Dont cheap out on RAM. If you install Vista, more RAM the better. Vista home requires 512mb. I would go at least 1gb or more. Vista premium requires 1gb. I would go at least 2gb. A real good 256mb PCI-X video card is worth its weight in gold. Especially if you are going to do graphics or gaming. Good luck. You could probably do this yourself and save a good amount of money. It is not difficult. You can buy the part from a couple fo different websites.
any motherboard but i reomend 1 that suports pci express & sata and suports a lot of ram :D but the assembled pc maker should sort that out since you choice the procceor they find a board that works best with the proccesor

low down on procceors
yes amd is cheaper how ever this is becuase they are clocked to the max so usaly burn out quicker also i find they not as quick as intel mainly coz most programs are compiled for the intel meaning intels perform a little better since ur buyin a new pc might aswell make it a dual core 64bit :D

how ever depending what ur using ur pc for if mainly office work get 1 of the cheapest proccesor u can since u wont need it to be that fast if for latest games ul want quite a good 1

also many people think stuff like watchin dvds and videos requires good procceors and fast graphics cards(as pc world would lead u to belive) it dont u can watch a dvd on a 0.5ghz processor with only a 16mb graphics card quite happly anothe as i use to 5 yrs ago

and yes factory pcs are usaly cheaper than making 1 ur self but the cutomize ation it the best plus the fact that u can then update it and you know what u need (if u buy 1 from dell u may find the dvd writer in it is not standard ide ) also since assembled ur self u know what ram it takes weather its sata enabled meaning u know when to update and what to buy

and as for the some moron bit no some moron didnt do it in garage some calculator did on a factory line and dell toshbia and so on usaly are out date with whats in a pc since rember they make 100s of um and before they realse them they desgin and make 1000's meaning by time there latest pc realsed it already 6 months old latest pc on del site 2.8ghz dual core with 512mb graphics and 2gb ram and tv card woopti do the 3.2ghz dual is out same with a for 1gb graphics card and u can now get 4gb in a desktop (the 1 on dells site is now old)
Don't bother. factory PC as almost as cheap these days and have warrenties. Check out gateway.com or toshiba.com they have cheap reliable PCs that some moron didn't put togther in his garage.
