Go to the website for the motherboard and get the latest drivers for XP Pro and download them onto your desktop. If a zip file create a folder on your desktop and upzip the zipfile into it. Try installing it from there. Another way is to click on the audio in your device manager go to drivers tab and click update driver and point to your drivers on desktop or CD. Make sure its not set at "digital" in the audio GUI. If you were in CMOS and clicked "load setup defaults" go back in and make sure "onboard audio" is enabled as some boards disable it by default. You can also try removing or uninstalling the audio in the device manager then rebooting. Windows should see new hardware and either install it automatically or ask for the drivers. If you have the new drivers point to them. if not point to the drivers on your motherboard CD. With AC97 I suggest you use the latest drivers for your board as you will probably be able to tell a difference in sound quality.

You should reload the driver off the CD that came with the motherboard , and I would also check under Hardware Manager to see if any other hardware has been screwed up by the "update".
Is your motherboard MSI brand? If so then get a real sound card. I got a motherboard that's MSI and had to get an actual sound card because I couldn't use my mic.
