External hdd problem, can u solve?
i recently purchased a 100 gb seagate 4200.2 [2.5"] ext hdd. but when i connect the device, the bios freezes and the ext hdd LED
blinks continuously. xp says it cannot install the device!
the hdd works perfectly in my friend's PC. please suggest bios or any other suggestions!!!

Some external hard drives just don't work. I've seen the same problem with USB based Wireless Adapters. There does not seem to be around this problem. Just try a different brand.
If you are using Windows XP, and your friend is using Windows XP, you might REFORMAT that hard drive on his machine. If you are only going to use this with Windows 2000 or Windows XP or Windows Vista, then pick NTFS. You see, some external hard drives contain bogus startup code. Reformatting will clear that kind of problem.

if it says it cant install, you can install manually, using Add/Remove hardware wizard, and then selecting the HDD manufacturer type and then install manually.
it can be possible that there are corrupted files in your windows, so try repairing your windows.
another method you can try but might not help, go to the HDD company website and download any driver if any are there,
When you boot up your computer go into System Setup when that option comes on before Windows loads. It should be either F2 or F12.
In setup check to make sure that USB support is enabled. If not then enable it and re-boot.
