Who to connect a ide disk drive to the computer?
Answers:
OK here is IDE basics. Each IDE device has a flat ribbon cable that connects on the back. Ensure the connector is flipped up correctly. Now also there is a small 1in X .25in power plug that connects on the back also and only connects up one way. Now for the most important part. The jumper. On the back between the power and ribbon cable is a set of about 7 pins usually a small 2 pin jumper, and it needs to be a certain way. Now as far as I know, the IDE ports on the 'puter really don't care which HDD you start up on for your OS, but you just need to make sure that it is selected in bios ( mentioned later ). For each IDE cable, there are 2 HDD connectors, and each device needs to be configured as follows
Option 1) Only 1 device, no jumper, and plug either cable
plun in.
Option 2) 2 devices, need to be selected for master and slave. 1 device must be master ( no jumper, or as per the drawing on HDD top. I think the first set of pins) and the other as slave ( I think the third set of pins, but check the drawing usually on the top of the HDD ) Then the Master is the plug closest to the MOBO, and slave on remaining...
Option 3) CS ( cable select ) put both devices in the CS setting w/ the jumper on the CS pins as per HDD drawing on top. ( I think middle set ). Then plug either connector into either HDD.
Now when you put it all together, plug it all up and do startup. Hit the f2, or DEL key whichever to get into bios. Make sure that all IDE's are set to AUTO to detect on startup, and go to your boot selection. This is important that you select your Boot HDD as your one that has the Operating System on it. If all else fails pick one, and if it doesn't boot, try again, and select another one. Eventually you will get there...
