Why do we have different terms like laptop, notebook, thinkpad? other than branding, are there any differences
Answers:
When portibles first came out the laptop was bigger than the notebook. Today they both mean the same. Thinkpad is a brand name of LT for Lenovo(IBM).
Laptop and notebook commonly referred terms. Thinkpad is the brand name given by IBM (now by Lenovo) to it's line of noteboooks.
Originally they were used to describe the weight on the computer, but now they are used interchangeably.
Dear Valli,
A Laptop, as we call it in India is known as a Notebook in US and other Western Countries, while ThinkPad is only a brand name for the Laptops of IBM. This division of IBM has now been sold to Lenovo, who has the right to use the name Thinkpad till April 2008, after which this name will be desolved.
Technically, they are all the same.
Cheers!!
Deepak
