How do you get internet on a laptop?

i just bought a laptop and i know nothing about how to get internet on it.. i have it with a high speed isp...

I want to know how internet works on a laptop. I heard something about cards. And the wifi card picks up the hotspots?

But how do you get laptop internet like desktop internet but without the wires. And definatly not dialup. Some type of broadband

Answers:
a wireless router!! thats how im connected to the internet right now!! no wires needed and behind my desk it looks so neat because there aren't any wires....((i have verizon dsl, also))
You can buy a wireless router, or use your neighbours if his wireless is unsecured :P
If you have a wifi card, it can pick up hotspots for internet. You can get wireless/wifi cards 2 in 1 as well.
well, if its wireless you need like an airport. or atleast thats what you need for a mac. or you could plug it in...
You could get a wireless card and router. You can get some fairly cheap ones (Belkin, I have it) at Wal-Mart, a total of under $150. It will work for any kind of internet you have.
if you have a wireless roughter buy a d- link
hi, i have a laptop I LOVE IT.... you can get internet with your high speed..you can connect it to the phone jack. since you want it wireless (thats what i have) i have DSL and bougth a router for like 80 bucks and just follow the instruction to get it wireless.... its really easy... Plus I also have my desktop with the internet.... Internet on a laptop is very similar to internet on a desktop with the big difference being the way in which you connect your devices to the machine. The first question you need to answer is how will you connect the computer to the internet connection. This can be done via a wire (i.e. Ethernet) or it can be done via wireless which is often called Wifi.

If you are going to us Wifi, you will need some sort of a Wifi device on your laptop and another Wifi device on the internet connection side. (picture this like walkie talkies. you always need two of them to communicate.) In most cases the Wifi on the Internet side is going to be an all-in-one unit that is a router/switch/Wifi unit. You may already have one of these devices if you are sharing your internet connection.

The second part is the Wifi on the laptop. Many laptops these day come with built in Wifi. If you do not have Wifi built in, you can connect a Wifi card via a PC-Card connection (aka PCMCIA) or a USB connection depending on what works for you and your specific machine. If you decide to use a hard wired internet connection then the process is similar, but there is a wire to connect and you would need an ethernet port or eithernet card on your computer. (This will provide an RJ45 plug which is the 8 wire connector that looks like a big phone jack)

In either case I would consider an all-in-one router. This will also act as a firewall between all your computers and the internet connection which is a good safety feature. The big difference will be if you buy a unit that has Wifi built in since Wifi is one of the options that you can choose or not choose. In addition, there are multiple standards of Wifi with different speeds and costs. Wireless "B" is the origional and is slow at 10 Mbps. Wireless "G" was next and moved up to 54 Mbps. There are now various newer standards with higher speeds, but amny technologies are proprietary and require equipment from a specific manufacturer. In most cases you don't need the speed since any of these technologies will be faster then even the fastest internet connection.

So the best place to start would be the following...

1. Check to see if you have any sort of all-in-one router already. Some Internet services give you one. If you do, look at the options on the unit to see if there is anything already built in that might work. It should work with ethernet (wired) connections and maybe it has some form of Wifi. If you do not have a Router, plan on making this investment to get the laptop connected and for security reasons. In addition, it will be needed if you plan to share your connection with your new laptop and an older machine.

2. Check out that laptop. Most will have an ethernet connection (wired) and many have Wifi. See if there is an option that is available on the router and the laptop. Most likely you will be able to get them working via wired ethernet with nothing more than an ethernet cable. It's also possible that both already have Wifi and that you can set this up as well. If Wired Ethernet is available, this is a good way to get up quickly and for cheap. The cable should be less then $10.

3. Decide if you need to buy something and then research the available options and brands. You you need an all-in-one router you will need to decide on a brand and the options. Specifically you will need to choose a Wifi version. If you are a newby to Wifi then you should think about Wireless "G" since this is the economical way to get a reasonably fast connection. In terms of Brand, you may like one brand, but the major brands are very comparable and I would suggest selecting brand by which is the most economical.

4. If you need to buy an ethernet or wifi card for the laptop then you have a different set of questions. First, if you are going with Wifi, be sure that the card on the laptop supports the same Wifi standard as the Router you selected. Secondly you will need to choose how the unit will connect. Likely you will connect via a PC-Card (PCMCIA) connection or a USB connection. A Wifi to Ethernet card might also be an option if you have a Wired ethernet connection (RJ45) on your laptop. Finally, you have brands to select and if you are buying a card and a router I would suggest you get the same brand since the likelyhood of problems is smaller when both sides are the same brand. (Plus you can call one tech support line if you have problems)

5. Once you have all the equipment, you will need to install and configure the connnection. There are many pitfalls in this process and I would expect that you may be asking another question or two at this time. The best place to start is by reading the manuals or support web sites provided by the manufacturers of the equipment you purchase. They will give instructions to setup the specific units and you will likely learn a lot when you read the manuals. Then when you get stuck you can either ask your next question or research how to configure these technologies on the web.

Good Luck!
