Laptop Question Computer Buffs Needed?

Hello,

i need a laptop for university just to chat on msn and do research and to write papers. I have no idea about laptops but am building one at circuit city. it's a dell computer, the new ones that come in those vibrant colours. I wanted to know if these features were worth spending the extra fifty dollars and what exactly they were.

1.5GB Shared DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz, 2 Dimm
120G 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive
128MB NVIDIA® GeForce™ Go 8400M GS
Dell Wireless 1490 802.11a/g Mini Card

1.5GB Shared DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz, 2 Dimm
More internal memory will make the computer run faster and with less problems, especially if you have many programs running at once (e.g. word process and web browser and music play all at once)

120G 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive
More storage on the computer for pictures, movies, songs etc. If you want to have lots of these, go for it, otherwise skip it.

128MB NVIDIA® GeForce
Only if you want to play video games

Dell Wireless 1490 802.11a/g Mini Card
Only if you want to get wireless internet at the library or coffee house.
sounds good i know it is better than mine so u are in good shape
Before you do all that also don't forget to check the same configuration at Dell.com because sometimes it can be cheaper. Secondly for the things you mentioned the specs you listed are more than enough.
I always think it's good to spend the money on basics - most people who love their computer spent the $$ and the ones that don't like their computer or had problems - typically cut corners. you get what you pay for.

I used to work for Dell - You don't say what your chip is - I would guess it's duo core. Your ram is good, I would go with the 7200 rpm drive if you can do it.and it's available... but it'll be a good machine. I'd spend the money. Buy for the future.

Your video card will be really good with Vista... likes like a good system. Try going to the dell site and see if you can configure one like this one. Get the very best monitor. It's not like you can switch it out. Those colors are only as good as the monitor, and of course, the graphics card.
What processor does it have? You should have at least a core 2 duo or dual ciore. I'd also go for a minimum 256 MB video card. You should order irect at Dell.com there's better options free upgrades (ie 2GB Ram for the price of 1GB) and discount pricing on selected models.
1. provide link to system please
> not piecemeal
2. where did you get the option or idea of 1.5 gb ram
> senseless backward step
3. wi-fi built-in in laptops
> not optional, unless you choose a higher option
