Can you connect a modem to a wireless adapter then use the internet on your laptop?

I'm stuck? I want to use wireless on my laptop but im only using a cable modem. Can I connect a wireless adapter into my cable modem. Then access the internet through wireless in my laptop?

Don't i need to install the adapter into a computer or something?

Answers:
The adapter can be set up by itself, no PC needed. Connect it's input to the LAN output on the cablemodem.
Your laptop (when XP or Vista) will detect the wireless network, you say connect and... ready.
I advise you to set up a security on the wireless though...
You'll need to connect a wireless router to your cable modem. They you should be all set. :)
Well it depends. You need a wireless card to connect WIREESSlY to a network--But you don't Nessiciarly need a network in your place of establishment. This would be called Leeching off someone elses unsecured wireless device.

You can get away with it, but I would be careful.

Or you can by a router connect to another computer an use the intrernet from your own place.
