The top rated laptop is a MacBook Pro according to Consumers Reports. It gets positives for tech support and best battery life. The MacBook Pro though is a bit out of your price range. You can get a MacBook with a 13.1 " screen for around $1000 at the Apple store. It comes with iLife 08 which includes iPhoto, iMovie, iDvd, iTunes, Garage Band, Safari and more. You might want to add a DVD burner and Photoshop Elements. If you are a student, you get $100 off from Apple. Another advantage, no viruses, malware, or adware. The MacBook is wifi ready out of the box. I've had one for 18 months, no problems.
I think a mac book because it is excellent in graphics and music.
It also fits your price range.
