Hello; You didn't mention the Operating System you are using, so I'll guess it's XP... With Windows XP, just go to the start menu > Programs > Acessories > System Tools > Defragment
It's a good idea to do this about once a month for the average user... if you're a heavy user; one who installs & uninstalls many programs; downloads lots of programs video or music, then deletes... leaving lots of slack space, etc. it would be a good idea to do it more often... about once every other week... but doing it more often also puts more wear n' tear on the hard drive, potentially decreasing its' lifespan.
An additional suggestion I'd like to give you; visit www.webroot.com and check out their "Window Washer"; it's an excellent program that I highly recommend. I've been using it for about 2yrs now, and it is great! It keeps your PC uncluttered by clearing out files, that accumulate through normal use... it goes way beyond just emptying temporary internet files, it cleans files you don't know are there! I think thay have a free download, with two week trial... after that, it's about $20, which is not bad, for all it does. I run mine about every other day, to keep my desktops, and laptop running fast, and my network and internet connections speedy.
I hope you found this useful!;

all program, acceressories, system tools, defrag
if its vista. type defrag in the search box and press enter...
if its xp, then open my computer, right click on local disk, go to properties, click the tools tab...and then click defragment now.
finally...click defragment
go to my computer, and open it, and right click on the c drive and click on properties. Click on the tools tab and then click on def rag. Next I would click on the general tab after you are done defraging it and do a disc clean up. Then you probably need to get on the Internet, and click on tools and then click on Internet options and then on browsing history, click delete and another box will open. click on delete all and another box will pop up, click the box that says also delete files... and then click yes. You will see a change in how well your computer runs.
