To improve speed you will need to upgrade to a higher CPU ghz.
Well by adding extra physical memory it will reduce less stress on virtual memory thus improving performance.

you will be able to run more programs and yes internet connection can also improve. since it doesn't only rely on the modem. but it doesn't largely depend on this. to have better graphics, you also have to upgrade your video and graphics card.
Only if the other hardware can keep up, ram only stores program info while in use unless you have alot of ram, then it can hold unused info until its needed, and it can also use it for cache of the most used program files.

Start up and shut down will probably not improve, speed wise. Switching from different apps or how much space an app takes up will improve. I recently upgraded from 512MB to 2GB, and did not regret it, although the cost was irritating (kinda funny too... "I pay how much, and they send me this small package?)
memory doesnt have a lot to do with speed. Try upgrading the RAM to 1GB or even 2GB
I didn't know that upgrading your "mamory" would do anything for speed. If that were so my wife should be the fastest chick in the neighborhood...hehehe...;-}
If you have Vista greatly, Vista eats up RAM. If you have XP it will improve to a less degree.
