Pros and cons of using a laptop as a home comp?
Answers:
If the hardware is the same, either works. get a mouse and keyboard if you would like for the laptop and speakers to amp up sound and you have a desktpn replacement, cooling could be an issue though.
can be easily stolen
Laptops are good for business-like things and surfing the internet only ,imo.
For gaming, laptops just don't cut it.
I use a laptop as a home computer and I will never go back. Especially with wireless. I am sitting in the recliner right now, my feet propped up, coffee by my side. It is great.
I bought a good one with a lot of memory, good speakers, and a big screen.
I just walk over to the usb and print when I need to.
I love it.
Limited space is certainly a serious reason but will you be doing a lot of keyboard work? If so, the laptop is woefully inadequate and you may want to hook up an external keyboard. The mouse is also more convenient to use than the built in device on the laptop.
i use a laptop as my home comp and im usually on it over 10 hours a day. The biggest problem is that it will overheat and shut off, especially when it is hot outside, or i am playing video games on it. I solved this by propping it up on books to allow for more airflow but it will still overheat from time to time.
I usually leave my laptop on all day but i keep a notebook cooler on it.
There are only two big cons of using a laptop that I can think of. First, it's harder to upgrade. Second, and this is really if you're a gamer, you have to make sure it has a good video card that's supported by most gaming companies. It has to be an ATI or nVidia card.
Pro? Ease of use, portability, and smaller. You should plug it in only if the battery is low. Use it until the battery is low unless you are gaming, then keep it plugged in. If you keep it constantly plugged in, the battery will be pretty much useless as it will die soon after you unplug it because it's relying on the charger so much.
I was reluctant at first to get a laptop too. But I've owned and used one exclusively for a couple of years now, and I will never buy a desktop for my own, personal home use again. Laptops take up little space. You can move them around in your house...maybe its regular spot is your den, or wherever, but if you one day want to do surf the net in the kitchen...like, look up a recipe and have it right there on the kitchen counter while you're cooking...no problem. Maybe your loud, annoying extended family is visiting, and you want to hide in the attic...take the laptop...watch a DVD. You wanna IM with friends outside, on your patio...go for it!
And if you move to a new apartment...your laptop will be so easy to pack.
OK, and this is kind of gross.but...you can also compute...ON THE TOILET!
The possibilities are ENDLESS!
Laptops are easy to break. As in, spill water on the keyboard and the whole computer goes, whereas a desktop's keyboard is separate from the rest of it.
However, that really just boils down to being careful. One shouldn't eat and drink at the computer anyhow, so it's not a huge problem.
In general, I'd only plug it in when it needs charging.
May God bless you.
Laptops are more expensive than desktops.
Laptops tend to overheat, especially if you put them on your lap. Often you need to make sure air can get under your laptop to keep it from getting hot.
If you dont specifically need a laptops portability, then I do not recommend it, I would go with a desktop instead. You could put the tower on a shelf, and a thin flat screen monitor would take almost no more space than a laptop.
I have a desktop and a laptop and my wife has a laptop. Even though my desktop is custom and overall better performance that my laptop, I tend to use my laptop a lot more.
The PRO for desktop is its so easy to upgrade, or replace broken parts it may be they way to go if you don't want to purchase another pc for a few years. Laptops sometimes are hard to keep cool with prolonged use/video games, etc.
Laptop batteries eventually stop working properly (not keeping full charge, etc.), but working with a laptop plugged in in no problem.
Right now you can find much better prices on a nice desktop package with lcd screen than you can a laptop.
The best pro about laptop is you can use it anywhere in home, plus if you travel it's so easy to bring your laptop along. My wife and I travel often- when we are in a city we have not been to before, a laptop with in-room internet is invaluable.
Hope this helps.
They can get damaged easier.
Be sure to get a mac.
good
1. saves a lot of space
2. easy to set up
bad
1 if you spill a drink on the keyboard the whole laptop is fried forever.
2 if someone wants to steal your laptop it's a lot easier to take than a whole computer.
whatever you do, buy a mac for a laptop, PC's suck no matter what, but they are even worse in Laptop form. (if you really wanna run windows, you can, all new macs have an intel processor, so you can boot up to windows, not that anyone would want to.)
Good Luck!
theres nothing bad about it. thats what i used to have.
