Has vista been out long enought to fix a lot of the bugs? Or should I still wait to buy a new laptop?
Answers:
Hello;
I think I'm in the same boat as you; I'm not too fond of Vista, or what I've heard about it either... and worst of all, I'm an A+ certified PC Tech, making the painful transition to Linux (any form that works!).
Because Windows is prone to errors and bugs, there will always be upgrades for it coming out. So just make the plunge! There's still laptops being sold with XP Pro, even if they're "refurbished", it's better than Vista, right? I just got a new laptop, and it came with Vista... it works alright, but when I wiped the hard drive, and installed XP pro on it... it flew! Yes, Vista is a memory and resource HOG! It takes 1Gb memory to run at "alright" speeds, and 2Gb to be snappy fast! I noticed when I got to the end of the MS user agreement document (you have to agree, to use it...) It said (i'll type this as I remember it); you may revert back to Windows XP Home/Pro, but MS or your vender (who you bought the PC/Notebook from) isn't liable to give you the older OS... so basically their admitting that Vista sucks, and if you want XP you gotta buy it from them! MS is also cutting all vendors off from selling XP machines by the fall... can't remember the exact date... but they've heard all the pissed off ppl reverting back to XP, and they stand to make even more $$$ by charging you about $100 or more (added to the cost of your new computer), then charging you again, to revert back to XP (home/pro)!
I went completely through Vista, and shut off BS I didn't like, dumbed it down to look like Windows 2000 Pro, (windows Classic they call it, same as I had my XP looking), it seems to work faster... but the additional 1Gb RAM will be of more help!
Another alternative you might wanna look in to (I am now) is the many Linux Operating Systems; some are reportedly better than others, while some are said to be easier for novices coming from Windows environments... I've tried Kubuntu & Ubuntu Linux so far, but haven't been able to use the Wifi feature on my Aspire 5050, but as soon as I get this worked out, i'll be making the switch permanent!
Oh, many of the Linux OS's don't have to be installed to use; they come with a "live" CD option, that allows you to run them off the CD, (when booted from the CD, it temporarily bypasses your OS (Windows), and loads Linux). I notice my resolution is better, the PC is faster (and that's off a CD!; imagine if I installed it on the hard drive?). Although it is slower when accessing new things into memory, off the CD, but if your system works well with linux, try to make the switch... it's damned hard to re-learn everything you know about windows... Linux is more command line driven, and less picture clicking (graphic user interface), but once learned, I really think your PC will surely fly, and be of more use, for many more years than if you stayed with Windows. You'll also be finally free of the Evil Empire which has controlled us all for far too long!
I hope this helped, even with my own 2 cents worth!

No, no, no, no, no! You should buy a Mac. I have had Microsoft computers since the 80's. I'm switching. I'm tired of their cra*!
I seriously recommend that you wait a bit longer before jumping into Vista - it's still got a staggering number of problems - especially with driver support (hardware compatibility) & legacy software compatibility (older programs).
A good rule of thumb for new Microsoft operating systems is to wait for the first "service pack" to be released before upgrading to them.
Actually, Vista does not have very many bugs. The issue you may run into is driver compatibility for your hardware with such things as printers and digital cameras. Being such a new operating system, they have not had time to make all hardware drivers available yet.
nonononono vista NOOOO its only been out for a little while, u need to wait AT LEAST a year! even then, they're gonna update, and fix, and reupdate, and so on and so forth....by all means WAITTT, if u really wanna save money tho, invest in a MAC, yea they're expensive, but trust me, [i have one so im partial but i had a pc for ages so i kno] that with a mac, youll never wanna TOUCH a pc again, macs are like lighting fast, never wait, never freezes, easy startup, cool, modern feel, u can still get all ur office stuff like word, powerpoint, etc, but its sooo much easier, and u can even get ADDED features to ur word document that u cant get on a pc! its tooottally the better buy, but if u insist on a pc, wait at least a year.
retailers have started offering XP and Vista,.. instead of just Vista,... this would be a good indication that Vista still has bugs, and that the consumers want a reliable system,.. which is XP at the current time
They sent it out with bugs...wait till version 2.0
No, it takes about a year to work out bugs to where you will have minimal problems.
Why all the trouble when you can just get a Mac? Forget the windows crap, take my advice.
No, the bugs are not out of Vista. Microsoft is still getting bugs out of XP, let alone Vista. Both of these are virus magnets attracting at least 114,000 virii that do NOT infect either Mac or Linux. If you can afford a Mac, get it, but if your budget is limited, get the next best thing..go to www.kubuntu.org and download "feisty fawn". That is the most secure, most usable, easy to use, and inexpensive operating system in the world, ever. Oh, yes, its free because it is open source.
No can help on this one friend...:D
