How do I turn off my notebook!?

I have recently bought a Dell inspiration notebook. I've turned it on today and then i tried to turn it off, but it enters in a standby mode or something and i just can't get rid of that. i want it to be like completely shut down. oh...and when i open the display, it doesn't appear any "log in " windows or something...it just stays black...i really don't know what to do to make it work again. i've tried everything - read the instruction manual and done what it said there, pushed the power button etc, but the power led is still on. what should i do?! can anybody help me?

Answers:
Press the power button and hold for a few seconds and it will completely shut down. On the Power button and it will start up as normal with the login screen. When you want to off the power, pls use the Windows shutdown button. If it hangs, hold the power button for a few seconds and it will shut down. Closing the laptop lid or the power button without holding will send it to a standby mode.
on the start menu of vista there is an arrow in the bottom right corner click on that then shut down
press and hold the power up button. It will shut down completely in 10seconds or less
unplug and plug it back in and then start it again and then sut it down so tat way it shuts down on your terms
Check in your screen saver power setting
Right click on your desktop --->properties --->screen saver ----->power and make it the setting as shutdown.
Try keeping the power button pressed for about 10 seconds. It will shut down.
