Exactly what kind of USB cable do i need?

Any kind. GO FOR IT. You see, USB 1.1 and USB 2.0 use the same cable. Most USB 2 devices will still work on computers that have the older USB type.
When you plug a USB 2 device into an older USB port, you often get a message that complains... but it works anyway.
Of course, if your computer does not have any USB ports, then you really should consider getting a printer that has the old parallel printer port.
Try to avoid using a USB hub; as some devices won't work through a hub. Many scanners, many network and wireless network adapters, many cameras don't work through a hub. While many printers do, if they are an all-in-one, the scanner part might have trouble. You see, many devices are also powered by the device, and many USB hubs do this poorly. So look for a hub that has it's own power. I would also buy a USB 2 hub.

USB is a standard, there aren't different types of USB cable. (Some may argue between USB 1 & 2, but there are no differences in the cable make-up).
Providing both your printer & pc have USB connections, any USB cable will do.
Odds are you will need a standard male USB-A to male USB-B cable. The USB-A is the rectangular 4-pin that is in common use today (flash drives, cameras, etc.). USB-B is a square connector with 2 pins over 2 pins (see here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/usb... ). Most computer stores will only sell this type of cable.
Note: Don't buy an extension cable. Those are male USB-A to female USB-A. They can only be used for extending the reach of the cable. If you need one, you are better off moving the device that you are trying to reach.
