Well I found my dream laptop, it was super expensive though. It's a Sony Vaio VGN-FZ18E. I got it in germany. If you just want it for school then have a look around. But Sony's are really high quality and I bet you can find a good one which isn't very expensive. They usually last long as well. I'm not sure if I'd trust best buy with things such as laptops. If you're gonna buy one, it should be a good one. Because if you need to buy another one then it will end up being, what, nearly 1000 bucks. and from that you can buy a better one that will last. I also love playing Sims. my brother, whose great with computers, said that you also shouldnt get a Intel graphics card, theyre really not great. also if youre gonna get vista, get home premium. there rly isnt a big diff. between xp and vista home basic, home premium is the one with the style. otherwise just go for an xp, probably simplest. If you're just browsing and writing papers, any old laptop would do (even the ones with those lousy Sempron or Celeron processors... which will save you a ton if you buy one of those).
When I buy Laptops, I like to go to ubid.com and get a "Manufacturer Refurbished' (not a "Refurbished", but a "MANUFACTURER Refurbished" laptop). It is an auction site, like ebay. You can get some pretty nice ones for good deals if you don't mind checking back every day as different auctions start.
I would make sure that it has at least 512MB RAM if it has Windows XP, and 1GB of RAM (minimum) if you are running Windows Vista.
The rest of the specs are probably not terribly relevant if you are just using it for basic stuff.
You shouldn't get a Gateway because Gateway makes low quality computers. If you want a high quality laptop, you should get a Toshiba Satellite M65-S9092. I have one, and I love it. I would highly recommend it.
