I have an old dead notebook computer. I'm not concerned about the notebook but how do i get data off the drive

you can do it provided the hard drive is in working condition
get an external usb enclosure for a 2.5" hard drive
this way, you can connect it as an external usb hard drive & get to the data

note: that you mentioned old, i've selected ide connected hard drive
