Answers:
I would stay away from dell, they are expensive and 9 out of 10 computers I fix are from dell.
I would go with an acer or asus.
You probably arent going to be doing any hard core gaming, so you really dont need a powerful graphics card, but you probably will be multitasking, so a powerful cpu is probably a good choice. The who core duo line is very powerful. I have one of the 1.66ghz ones, the least powerful, and its good enough for hard gaming.
This laptop has the 1.73ghz core duo, has a 160gb hard drive, the largest they make for laptops, and it is compact:

I'm hooked on the Toshiba Sattellite. A good computer & you can get them on good sales at office depot.
Here check this out :D
My lil brother is gonna go 8th too, nd i was planing to get him a laptop on september...
its been a month am lookin the laptops tho...
I would recommend to buy HP pavilion with AMD dual core 1.8 GHZ processor, minimum 2 GB RAM , and 256 MB NVIDIA VGA graphic card, and 120 GB HDD...
i calculated it was comin up nearly around 850 bucks... free shipping and all that stuff...
Remember i told u the configuration that is suitable for a highschool student...
if u wanna get a better one then u have to pay more, related to the job that u want the laptop to do for u ...
good luck kiddo
ADD: I recommend HP or Toshoba...
Forget about DELL,
and ive got Sony VAIO, and its gr8 , but its expensive...
I would look at Dell or Fujitsu right now. My company works on Toshiba, HP/Compaq, and Dell machines. Toshiba has probably the worst track record of the three machines. Look at http://www.slickdeals.net/ they always have deals from Dell, and the office supply stores.
I got the Toshiba Satellite at Costco and have been very pleased with it. Very affordable computers with excellent graphics, built-in wireless card and DVD. They have excellent battery life as well. Good luck!
stay away from the compaq. and well i have a toshiba satellite and even though i like it it does **** up ever so often. and some parts were defective. i also have a gateway and it works wonderfully! and the gateway are pretty cheap! and its perfect for school work! :D
Hi Champ. When you are imminent to purchase a new laptop, you always want to get the best for your money. That's why buying a laptop can be very exciting, yet so wonderful and important in our lives. It's like you are buying a new car.
Anyway, there are laptops made of poor qualities and laptops made of good qualities. But now of days qualities don't obviously matter since top class brands are now the thing.
I am not saying top brand names are made of poor qualities, so please do not assume so ( Smiles)
Top class brands start with the apple Macbook. This particular laptop will impress your schoolmates and many more people. Visit link to see description http://store.apple.com/1-800-my-apple/we...
After that, you have Dell. Dell is a classed brand that is known today as one of the most popular brand. They recently came out with the lightest notebook ever there is, weighing less than 4 pounds. It is packed with all neceesaries. Vist link for description http://www.dell.com/content/products/pro...
Now, we have the Sony notebook as well that is a high class notebook that will definitely impress you and others. But I am not a big of Sony products...
You can also purchase a Macbook then buy the skim for it on ebay, such as pink if you want to. Visit link for an example http://cgi.ebay.com/apple-macbook-13-3-l...
