How can I verify my iBook hard drive is corrupt?
I wanted to erase all my old files for safety, but I have been unable to boot in target disk mode, and I am unable to boot from the Mac OS X CD.
Does this mean I'm okay? My old files are gone?
Answers:
If you haven't erased it yet then your data is still on the hard drive, be it corrupt or not. One can repair a corrupt hard drive if it isn't too badly corrupted to extract the data with software like Diskwarrior or use a program like FileSalvage to extract data from the corrupt hard drive. If you can remove the hard drive and install it in an external drive, you can erase it with another Mac.
Your files are still on there but there is a good chance that they are sooooo corrupt that it is a mute point. If you are worried about people using your files by slaving the hard drive just simply keep the hard drive your self and buy a cheapo 40 gig drive.
Its a MAC, therefore it is.
I have seen so many HDD problems with Macs, especially exactly when we need them to work, Ive thrown all ours out.
We lost 5 months of film because of a POS MAC.
Take the battery out. You should try starting up from just the power supply. Insert the MacOs X disk that it came with, hold down the "c" key and try starting up. If it does, than use the disk utilty program to erase and format your hard drive and do a clean install of MacOs X.
