How can I copy my laptop hd onto a portable hd?
Answers:
Hi there. This is definitely possible. Residential/Corporations use various different kinds of software to get the job done. One I might suggest is Norton Ghost from the following location:

They have a few different options. The one you'll want is "Copy Hard Drive". Fortunately, Symantec offers a short-term phone-based support line for assistance with these sorts of things. The software will also create full working backups in the event that your new hard drive takes a nosedive.
Hope this helps,

Youll end up having to reinstall the software on the reformated pc anyway, all you can really do is backup your data, email, etc...
You need to do a drive clone. To do this, you will need a specific software program that allows you to do this. It will not work to simply copy your C:\ drive to your D:\ (or whatever) drive.
Check to see if your portable drive came with such a utility as some do. You can also check out the manufacturer's website to see if they have one free for download. If not, you can look into a program such as Norton/Symantec Ghost, however you have to pay for it.
