My Compaq laptop DVD /CD drive does not work?

I have a Compaq evo n100v with a CDr/rw & DVD drive. The drive reads DVDs fine, but won't even recognize CDs. This computer is in good shape, but is used, so I dont know of any past problems. Is there some way, other than replacing the drive, to fix this?

Answers:
sounds like it may be a corrupted driver go to
control center-system-hardware-device manager and look at CD/DVD is their a ! or x symbol? if so delete it and let windows reinstall it
