Laptop damage??
Answers:
You need to look to see what voltage the "borrowed" adapter is using and compare it to the one you need for your laptop. They need to match identically.
They don't sound compatible and could do some major damage. More than a adapter will cost.
It may be that the AC adapter is not compatible with the computer you are using. Just tell them you dog ate you homework.
Voltages to the laptop may be wrong (they are computer specific...) It may have killed your laptop to... you should sell the dog to pay for a new battery + AC adapter...
sounds like the ac adapter you are using is not compatible. although both laptops may be Sony (you didn't specify if they both are or not) that doesn't mean that they are the same specs. The Voltage, Ampage, and Polarity must be the same, or VERY close to work.
if the resume is that important, take the laptop to a Best Buy and explain the situation, they can either get you the right replacement AC Adapter (roughtly $129) or you can pay them to pull the file for you
There are differences in the power output of different chargers.
If the charger you borrowed does not match the output of the original then you risk damage your computer.
If your Battery was bad, it doesn't matter how many times you try to charge it, it's not going to happen.

Are the wattages in the voltages the same, on both adapters? cause if not you could have fried the system
at work someone put in the wrong one (90 in a 75) and it started to smell and not turn on, lucky it still works
The reason it is shutting down after a few seconds is because it is trying to power on via the battery and not the ac adapter. The ac adapter that you are trying to use is most probably not supplying enough wattage. Make sure that it is exactly the same adapter as the original.
In case it is identical, then you have a prob with your dc jack or system board. Let me ask you this, was the computer plugged in when the dog chewed it up? If it was, then there was some type of short and it most probably damaged your system board.
