AirPort Extreme card. how does it work?

i have an iBook G4, and im trying to get wireless internet on it. is an AirPort Extreme card my only option? and if i get it, will i be able to get internet connection anywhere i want to? even, for example, while driving or in another state? and is it nessesary to buy the base station along with the card? how do i know if i have the card slot?

im looking for a simple, straightforward answer because everywhere i go i get some kind of complicated explaination about routers and whatnot. i don't know much about this stuff, so please keep that in mind when answering.

Answers:
Yeah, with the G4 the Airport Extreme is you will need. Along with that you will need a router(base station) to connect to your modem. You don't need to buy Apple products for the router, although they do make things easy.

When you have the AirPort card, you will be able to access any open network and secure networks with the proper sign on information.
