Best notebook for $3000?
Pentium 4, Core solo or Core Duo Processor
2 PC Card/Card Bust Slots for network cards
1GB ram or higher
40GB or larger hard drive (i'm definitely looking for much larger)
3.5 inch floppy (optional) (do they even make these still?)
CD-ROM or DVD-ROM (I want a DVD burner, preferably dual layer)
integrated ethernet
802.11b or 802.11g wireless network adaptor
Windows XP Professional, Vista Ultimate, or Vista Business (Which one is the best?)
56k modem
Sound card to support realplayer

Which companies/types are the best? Most convenient for taking to school every day? durable? who has the best customer support? Any help with this would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks so much,
Lex

Well for the requirements you could get a laptop for much less. Check out web sites like dell, hp, or toshiba. I wouldnt get anything other than that. You can get a laptop with more than those requirements for much less than $3000 more around $1000. Any processor will work for schooling. the pc card slots, I dont even know if they make them with more than one. Ram, 1gb is almost the standard today. Most laptops come with at least a 80+GB harddrive. I just bought this one the other day with a 200GB. i dont see too many with floppy drives. All come with cd drives and i would say 99%have dvd-rw. ethernet is standard on most. wireless is also standard. I just got vista, which i feel in love with. On a brand new computer with winxp i would be pressing ctrl+alt+delete all the time. I havent had vista crash once on me. And I am able to run more programs all at once, and do more things. Modems are standard also along with the sound card. And you wont have a hard time finding one with 12 inch or greater screen. But i will advise you that the bigger the screen the heavier it will be, and awarkward. I have a 19 inch toshiba, it might as well been a desktop, it was huge I had to carry it in a backpack, and it didnt fit on any school desk. But pretty much go to best buy and find the one you like. Just about every laptop there will work. But i would let them know you are looking for one for school. You dont want to get a huge powerful gaming laptop that sounds like bulldozer coming down the road. My personal experience. I like toshiba, never really had a problem them, I have a HP now, and it think its great. I have never delt with dell, but i hear they are pretty good also. Hope this helps out some. I see some people put get an alienware. DO NOT GET AN ALIENWARE. you could get a laptop made by someone else for was cheaper than that. with alienware you are paying for a name. and a computer shaped like an alien head.
Alienware.com
Alienware is sooooo overrated and way over priced for what you get.
check out the new Sony Viao. About $2500 with 2gb of hard drive, high end graphics card, blue ray dvd player, 250gb hard drive and the latest monitor that will blow your *** away. And yes it operates onthe P4. (BEST BUY CARRIES THIS MODEL). WooHoo!! Check it out.
$2500 for the 15.4" widescreen and a bit more for the 17" version widescreen. The unit is impressive as hell.
The list below should give u a good selection to choose from
HP notebooks are some of the most reliable laptops out on the market. Go to hpshopping.com. You can customize a notebook that's right for you and have it shipped for free. I recent bought a notebook from the HP website and I am very impressed and satisfied with my laptop. (buy the accidental warranty, well worth it)
Check the link. I would buy this laptop if you want a killer system. It is Alienware. One of the best powerful laptops. I would suggest getting XP pro.
The bottom one would be good too.
I would look at the IBM (Lenovo) Thinkpads. They are way more durable than any HP, Dell. I recently built a high end Z61P and it came in around $2400. I got the faster 100 GB hard drive, high end ATI graphics card, 3 GB ram. I love it. I have fixed many laptops and the only thing I have seen broken on a thinkpad is the hinge, $40 fix.
I would also go with Vista Ultimate. Way better at managing media like pics and music.
A very nice unit, has become very popular, with good reviews. Most of the companies outsource their support. Core 2 duo is the top of the line CPU. No more 3.5s

Overview and Introduction
The Dell XPS M1330 is designed for those that want power on the go. If you're also fashion conscious and like to standout in a crowd, the looks of the XPS M1330 will help you in that area too. Sleek design coupled with a portable form factor and powerful components come together to make for a compelling notebook.
Also check out the Sony vaio sz series.

You don't need to pay $3,000 to get the best laptop. The Toshiba Satellite M65-S9092 is the best laptop, and it only costs you $1,092.99. I have one, and I love it. I would highly recommend it. Windows XP Media Center Edition is the best OS.
